These are not really reviews; they are more like just side commentary about Teen Titans and JLA. I don't like to write posts to just complain and complain, and I know I have complained over and over and over and over again about Teen Titans being the cemetery of happiness and JLA just being really pointless. But I can't help it today! I just can't, because the bastards are taunting me! TAUNTING ME! You'll see.

Really, it's like the perfect storm of metacommentary, when both Teen titans and JLA explain why they are sucking so hard right now.

I haven't written any reviews in quite a while. I just got behind in my reading and I don't like reviewing stuff three weeks after everyone stopped caring. And it's annoying because I had stuff to say about comics that came out three weeks ago. I don't remember what, but I knew I had something to say! I KNEW IT!

Reviews for Final Crisis #7, Mister X: Condemned #2, Batman Brave and the Bold #1, and Crossed #3 after the cut )

I have a confession to make. Remember Batman The Animated Series? That one everybody loves and says it’s the way Batman should always be and, you know… that one? I… I think… I am pretty sure I like Batman Brave and the Bold better than that one.

Now, don’t take me wrong, I don’t dislike Batman TAS at all, I actually like it. Now, I may not like it as much as others, but I like it. I think most people tend to forget that out of ten BTAS episodes 1 is great (mostly written by Dini and/or Timm), 1 is good, 5 are mediocre, 2 are plain boring, 1 is a complete turd. When it was good it was very good, but most of the time? Meh! Despite having some of my favorite moments I wouldn’t put BTAS in my top 5 superhero cartoons list ever. I don’t really have a list of that. I am not anal retentive enough to do that… actually, I haven’t had the time. But if I ever get the time, I wouldn’t put BTAS there.

So far every episode of Batman B&B instead has been glorious dumb fun and not a dull moment. Overall, I am enjoying B&B a lot more than TAS.

This scene needs MOGO!

Yes, I guess BTAS was more “sophisticated” than most cartoons, which in itself it’s not saying much, but it was hardly drinking Moet Chandon in the lobby of the Waldorf Astoria while reading Thomas Pynchon level sophisticated. It was more like drinking Zima in the lobby of a Holiday Inn while reading Terry Pratchet.

I have no clue what that is supposed to mean. I got lost there.

What I was going for is that B&B is a lot better at being dumb fun than BTAS was at being an art-deco, noir take on Batman.

The only thing I dislike about B&B is Batman’s narration. Really, Batman, shut up! Go shoot more missiles with your flying bat-bike or something.

So yeah, anybody watching B&B too?

Oct. 18th, 2008 @ 04:16 am Top 80s Fantasy Films… or please tell me I am not the only one who liked Ladyhawke!
Tags: ,
There is a site I read once in a while called RetroJunk that only has articles about old stuff and sometimes pointless top ten lists. They just made a top ten list of 80s fantasy movies. It has the movies you would expect like Labyrinth, Conan the Barbarian and The Princess Bride. But this list was written by a communist who eats babies and hates America! HE DIDN’T PUT LADYHAWKE!! EDIT: Or Time Bandits!

So yeah, tell me I am not the only who likes Ladyhawke.

I am aware that I might have some nerd / nostalgia blinkers working full time with this movie, but it certainly deserves to be in the top ten of 80s fantasy movies!

Sure, Ladyhawke may not be as infinitely quotable as The Princess Bride.

Ladyhawke may not have as much sword fighting action as Conan the Barbarian.

Ladyhawke may not be as visually stunning as Legend.

Ladyhawke may not be as horrifying and child scarring as The Dark Crystal.

Ladyhawke may not have David Bowie walking around with a perpetual raging hard-on during the entire movie like Labyrinth does.

But Ladyhawke is way much better than goshdarn stupid Beastmaster and Conan the Destroyer! Actually, it’s even better than Dragonslayer, but I kind of like that one, so I’ll let that one pass.

Ladyhawke has Mathew Broderick as a wisecracking thief. It has Michelle Pfeiffer as one of the very few damsels in distress that doesn’t just wait to be rescued, and it has Rutger Hauer kicking butt and wearing awesome knight armor made of pure bad ass imported from Badassistan ON A MISSION OF REVENGE!

The trailer doesn’t even try to explain the story, which is also very neat. Pfeiffer and Hauer are lovers cursed to never be together because Hauer transforms into a wolf by night and Pfeiffer into a hawk by day. So barring bestiality, they are pretty much screwed up. Hauer decides to kill the man who cursed, who happens to be the archbishop of wherever this story takes place. Possibly the only movie good guy who rides into a church and starts murdering people left and right in all fiction.

I couldn’t find a video of that whole scene, but this video here has a short part of the whole church fight:

Ladyhawke deserves more love.

And here we discuss the movies in the Retrojunk list, after the cut.  )

So, what 80s fantasy movies am I forgetting? Which ones you liked or hate?

Jan. 31st, 2008 @ 08:52 pm Teen Titans 55.
I am not entirely sure I should write this here, but there is a reason I haven't been writing anything in here. A few days ago I started feeling really depressed and even had some anxiety attacks. This had never happened to me, I just felt weird. I am being serious here by the way, I am going to stop pretending I fight crime with shampoo arrows in the DCU for a minute here. I didn't know what was going on with me. It's not like I got new problems, just the usual ones. I think it was the flu medication I was taking. I stopped taking it and I have started feeling more normal.

Right now things got back to normal, and I hope it was just the medication. But things got really scary back there. I was to depressed to read, write, watch or do anything. I was too depressed to try escapism.

So let's talk about Teen Titans 55 which I finally read!

HA HA! I told you you were going to crawl back to me! TOLD YOU!

You are going to call me, I know, and you are going to cry and say "Boooh... you are my best friend, I don't know why I left you and never returned your calls... waaaaaah!"

And I'm just going to say "Oh, OK. Wanna go to the mall or something?" Because I am not petty.

There is something I don't understand here, though. Supergirl left because Wondergirl kicked her out of the team. Can Cassie do that? Really? Is she the leader or something? I have been reading this book for a while, and the goshdarn couch in the living room is closer to being the leader of the Titans than Cassie. Yeah, that part made no sense.

Oooh... Eddie can't compete with Jaime. Rose no longer wants to swim naked in front of Eddie.

Let's be honest here: Eddie just can't compete with Jaime. Rose is cruel, and slutty, but she is frankly moving up there. Jaime is a big step up from Eddie. Jaime is funnier, doesn't look like a Halloween costume, whines a lot less and wants to be a dentist. That guy has a plan.

And, besides, what the hell can you do with Eddie? Where can you take him where he doesn't look out of place? A Gwar concert and that's it! And I don't like Gwar. Screw you, Eddie.

Ah, I see they forgot to put the "H" in Cassie's AIDS warning shirt again.

Well, this scene certainly didn't go where I thought it was gonna go when I started reading it. I thought Robin was boldly going to go where Superboy had been before. No dice. And then they broke up.

This issue felt more like McKeever was cleaning the house before writing what he actually wants to write than anything else. These issues usually feel artificial, and this one does too. Okay, for some reason Cassie and Supergirl are no longer BFF. Maybe McKeever didn't want Supergirl in the team, but I think that hurts Supergirl's own title, because she really doesn't have much cast members. And Tim and Cassie broke up. I guess they needed to clear the way for Spoiler/Violet who may or may not be coming back. Also, I think Tim had a girlfriend in his own title. What the heck is up with that? MANWHORE!

I have no clue what's Blue Beetle's status with the Titan's now. He is not part of the team, but he can stay around? Possibly just to watch Rose skinny dipping, but OK, whatever floats his boat.
